THE BEATITUDES FULFILLED IN CHRIST
Christ was poor and humble in spirit. “This mind … was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God … made himself of no
reputation, taking the form of a bondservant” (Philippians 2:5-7).
He mourned. “As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, saying, if you had known … the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes” (Luke 19:41-42). “When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And he said, where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept” (John 11:33-35).
He was meek. “Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart” (Matthew 11:29).
He hungered after righteousness. “His disciples urged him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But he said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know … My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:31, 32, 34).
The beatitudes simply show us characteristics that the Spirit can work in us through Christ if we yield to Him. We need to consciously make efforts to grow in Christ.
