How Are Christians Justified?
Romans 5:1 – “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”
As humans, we always want to go with the “you get what you give” mentality. That is, you want to do right to get right. This rule may apply to some areas of your life, a good example is in your academics as you have to study to do well; or even in business, you work hard to get a profit. However, in Christianity, we do not need to be “self-righteous” to be considered righteous. We do not need to work for righteousness; we are made righteous, having believed in the gospel. This does not go well with some devout people as they want to do well, to get well.
The key scripture makes us understand that we are justified (made righteous) by faith in Christ Jesus, through His work on the cross. It is also very important that we note that this righteousness is not earned, it is a gift.
“For by grace have you been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
So, you do not need to clean yourself up to be saved (you can’t do it even if you wanted to), that’s not your work to do. It is Christ’s work and he has done everything that needs to be done on the cross. Trying to clean yourself up would be more or less, saying that you do not need a savior, when in fact, everyone does. Jesus did not come for the righteous but the sinners so that in believing in the gospel, they can be made the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ. Hence, it is safe to assert that we are justified not by our works but faith in Jesus Christ.
Thank you Jesus for I am justified!
