Living Above Jealousy, Envy, Hate and Strife
But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.
For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.
In the church or a gathering of believers, it is very easy for jealousy or strife to pop up. Why would jealousy pop up? Well, we are humans and it is a natural reaction we get towards anyone who seems better than we are. You know, this jealous feeling may not be only towards our brothers and sisters in Christ but also towards unbelievers as well. I just want you to know that it is normal to have these feelings. However, because we are humans, does this mean that we must conduct ourselves according to the flesh? Of course not! We have been sealed with the Holy Ghost (Glory to God!!) (Ephesians 1:13; 2 Corinthians 1:22). Hence, we are not humans, we are spiritual! So you are spiritual!
Our Key scripture explains that these kinds of feelings (or wisdom) are not of God. They are “earthly, sensual and demonic.” As Christians, when these feelings rise up, we renew our minds with the word of God. We are not envious; we do not live in strife. We have a huge advantage over the world: we have the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us (1 Peter 1:2). Hence, we cannot produce envy and strife as those are not the fruits of the Spirit.
In the previous verses, we can see what God’s wisdom is. It is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. “Hence, as Christians this is what we have inside of us and ought to exhibit. So, there is no room for strife and envy. Glory to God!
Lord, my mind is continually being renewed by your word.
