The Power of Proper Bible Study

Key Scripture

2 Timothy 2 : 15 “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.”

The KJV says, ‘Study’, and the word study is derived from the Greek word ‘Spoudazo’ which means to diligently study, this is done so as to rightly divide. The compound word is derived from the Greek word ‘orthotomeo’ which means to correctly disect, expound, evenly divide the word of truth (all in the light of Christ) . If we were asked to diligently study so as to correctly explain the word, then it is possible to wrongly explain the word. So many questions come as a result of lack of proper study, many arguments go on as a result of lack of proper study too.  Knowing this we were hence instructed to study properly.

Joshua 1

[8]Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

The instructions given to study properly didn’t begin in this time.  Proper study requires mediation, understanding will only come at that point. The word rightly divide was what Jesus did in Luke 24:27, He expounded the scriptures to them showing them things concerning Himself. Even though they had read the Holy scriptures or knew of it,  they never did understand it until Christ explained it to them.

In the place of study we pray, we meditate and as we pray the Holy Spirit reveals the true meaning of what the word is saying, because the word can only be interpreted by the spirit as it was inspired by the spirit as well. (Acts 11:4) You see Peter explaining scriptures rightly (Acts 18:26, 28:23),etc…We see how they took time to explain the word of truth, after Christ had already taken out time to explain to them too.  As believers, we are meant to also preach the word, but this can’t be done if we don’t study properly because failure to do proper study will lead to wrong teachings. So we are admonished to study.

I am deliberate about studying the word, I give myself to study. I am persistent and always intentional. As I study diligently, I rightly divide the word too. Amen
