How To Please God
Hebrews 11 : 6 – And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
The key scripture gives a really direct message regarding pleasing God, it explains that faith is what pleases God, in fact without it, you cannot please God. This however should raise certain questions in your heart, one of them is, have faith in what, or on what, what do we have faith in today to please God, and what does pleasing God even entail, I mean why are we “pleasing” God. Going through Hebrews 11, it outlines how the people of old believed God to be saved, how they had faith to be saved, that forms the context of the faith in that chapter, it’s referring to faith to be saved, that is believing in God’s ability to save.
Gods saving power for us today is revealed in Jesus in the gospel message, in fact, the faith being spoken about here is initiated by Him when we hear the gospel message, and this faith is preserved by Him too, keeping us forever in God’s pleased eyes. Reading further down from our key scripture, you’ll find this,
Hebrews 12 : 2 – We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
So to the next question, what does pleasing God mean? Well if it hasn’t been made clear already, we can see that what pleases God is that we are saved, and that we express our salvation. Let’s check out this scripture
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
Isn’t this awesome. When we hear the gospel message and believe, faith is stirred up on our inside, and God lives inside us and works in us to act out what His salvation has done in us. This is what pleases God, and this is how we should live, with our focus always on the power at work within us. Now it all adds up, without faith, it’s impossible to please God, meaning without faith in Jesus in the gospel message, it is impossible to be able to please God, because only when we believe in Christ can we have God working within us. Don’t forget however that the faith is even started by Jesus himself, what pleases God is seeing us saved in Him, reason why it pleased Him to bruise the son for us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your faith that lives in me and for salvation. Teach me to always focus on you in me, and express what you’ve done within me, amen.
