What is True Worship – What Makes a Worshipper?

Key Scripture

Matthew 14 : 33 – Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

One question a lot of believers have is on the issue of worship. What does it really mean to worship God? Does it mean to “sing to God” or dance to Him, well truth is worship first of all is a state of mind. When a king is worshipped, it’s basically because He is seen as a king, either because he was crowned king, or he did something great that warranted him to become king.

Singing is not the worship itself, it may be a resultant effect of worship, but in itself is not worship. Taking a look at our key scripture, we can notice something interesting, the disciples worshipped Jesus, they weren’t singing, but then they had just gotten a proper mindset regarding Jesus, that’s why they exclaimed;

You Really are the Son of God

So worship is simply the result of a proper state of mind, or should I say proper knowledge about God. So singing randomly to God isn’t actually worship, but getting to learn more about God and maybe singing what you have learned, or meditating about it would bring out true worship.

As believers however, we are encouraged to sing songs and hymms.

Colossians 3 : 16 – Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

However, do you notice something here? The songs are majorly for us, to enable us learn about Christ…it starts by saying;

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.

You see here that singing doesn’t “move” God, instead it changes us, by teaching us messages that fill our lives with Christ’s truths, that we can now express. The songs also get us full of the Spirit, i.e fully aware of who we are in Christ, look-up Ephesians 5 : 18 – 19 (you can tap the scripture to read it). Therefore if we must sing, it should stem from a proper mindset, not trying to move God, but simply expressing our knowledge of Christ. In the end true worship is seen not in random singing, but in proper understanding of Christ.

Matthew 15 : 9 – Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.

Jesus was more particular about what they knew or what they taught about God.

Lord Jesus I choose to learn more about you daily, so that I can truly express who you are from a proper understanding, thank you Jesus
