What To Do When Your Brother/Sister Hurts You
Hebrews 13:1 – Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters.
Colossians 3:13 – Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
I know people can really hurt you, I’ve heard, seen and experienced this so many times. I’ve come to realise however, that due to man’s fallen nature, it’s normal to have people make mistakes, or act selfish, not minding the adverse effect it’ll have on others, and sometimes you happen to be a part of the “others”.
Well as believers, how should we respond to negative acts against us? especially from our own brethren…offenses from our own brethren tend to hurt the most, and it seems to form the bulk of offence we experience, seeing that we hang around them a lot. One thing we see from our first key scripture, is that we don’t stop loving them. I’ve heard people say, “this person isn’t worthy of my love”, the truth is, who really is. That’s a statement hinged on conditional love, because if you examine those who you believe are worthy of your love, it’s mainly because they give, or are giving you something.
However as believers, we are not taught to love that way, but to love sacrificially, just like Jesus did, not expecting anything in return. The second key scripture, does justice to how offences come. Here we are asked to make allowance for “each others” faults, so let me burst your bubble, you are not Mr or Mrs perfect person too, you’ll also hurt someone, not all the time, but atleast sometime. Understand this, and be the person that leaves space for the offence of others, forgive them, just like Jesus did forgive you.
Many people don’t grab the weight of Christs forgiveness, that’s why forgiving others seems like a task sometimes. If you understand that price that was paid to get us this forgiveness, you’ll see how precious it is, and how much we don’t deserve it. People who were plunged really steep in sin would understand what I’m talking about. You’ll see how great His forgiveness worth.
Be the person who loves and forgives all the time, practise this, you’ll be expressing the beauty of your new nature, God bless you.
Jesus, thank you for your renewed heart and Spirit, teach me to always forgive and to always love just like you did, amen.
