How To Harness Your Emotions as a Christian
2 Timothy 1:4 – I long to see you again, for I remember your tears as we parted. And I will be filled with joy when we are together again.
Everyone has got emotions. Emotions can be very misleading most times, and it’s majorly because they are physical, and simply respond to physical changes. One time you may “feel” love, only to discover it was never really love, but just a mix of emotions. Another time, you could “feel” angry, probably because someone stained your expensive shirt, or like young Timothy in our key scripture, you could “feel” sad, maybe because you lost a loved one; there is a digest that explains how to comfort a grieving believer, if you haven’t read it, please tap here.
Emotions are typically unstable, and aren’t a trustworthy source of direction, but glory to God, we have brand new Spirits, that can in fact give us accurate to the teeth direction.
Romans 8:9 – But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
You are not controlled by your sinful nature, you are controlled by the Spirit, because God lives in you. However, sometimes, our emotions tend to get the better of us, so how do we overcome it’s grip?
Well first things first, we don’t deny that we have emotions, and we don’t beat ourselves up when these emotions rise, either in ourselves, or in a fellow believer, but what we deal with at that point in time is our consciousness. Remember our key scripture, Apostle Paul speaks about how Timothy was sad, emotionally, when he left, but then he encourages him to remember the Spirit, God has given him, that same Spirit that lives in you.
2 Timothy 1:6-7
This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
So your emotions can obviously make you act different from your spirit, however your truth should be what your Spirit is. We are to remind ourselves of this constantly, encourage ourselves in this manner, not necessarily when emotions have crippled you, but at every point in time, even when your emotions are in check. This is how you keep your emotions at bay. It’s really important you learn this, because our decisions, as believers can be critical to the work God has committed in our hands, and we can’t let uncertain emotions, guide us in that. Emotions should not be your firsthand source of guidance, but Gods Spirit that lives in you.
God lives in me, He lives in my Spirit, and He is my guide
Lord, teach me to put my emotions in check, to always let myself be led by your Spirit, and to always effectively Cary out your will, amen.
