How to Be Christ’s Friend

Key Scripture

John 15:14 – You are my friends if you do what I command.

Being someone’s friend can have its ups and downs, you’ll have arguments, there’ll be emotional moments, and sometimes you may not just want to be around that person. But being a friend of Jesus is the direct opposite, it’s stress free, no burdens, and He’s an awesome guide too, in fact He says it himself.

Matthew 11:28-30
[28]Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
[29]Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
[30]For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

So it’s a beautiful thing to be a friend of Christ, but how do we make this happen? Well our key scripture explains this, Christ asks us to do His command to be His friend, but what is His command? Understand that here, He wasn’t talking about the old testament law, in fact believers today are not under that law.

Galatians 3:25 – And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.
Romans 6:14 – Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.

We have been set free from the law, when Christ said this He wasn’t talking about the commands of the law, but His command was of love.

John 15: 17 – This is my command: Love each other

How do we love each other if we have not seen His love, and where else do we see His love if not on the cross. His love in itself explains this command to love. John further speaks about this command, let’s see what He says.

1 John 3:23 – And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us

The root of that command is to believe in Jesus, in what He did on the cross, and in the fact that salvation comes through Him. Believe and believe alone. This means that once you become a believer by having faith in Jesus, you become Christ’s friend. So you reading this, yes you, if you are a believer, then you are Christ’s friend, that is His command, that you have faith in Him, and because you do, you can love others with the same love He loved you with.

Just say this to yourself, I am a friend of God, Christ calls me His own.

Thank you Lord for calling me your friend, thank you for the gift of salvation, thank you for your love.
