The Devils Trap?

Key Scripture

2 Timothy 2:25-26
[25]Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.
[26]Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

The devil can set traps? I was amazed when I saw this. How does he set traps though? I mean I haven’t seen anyone come up before and say that they saw a trap with the devils name on it. Well our key scripture sheds some more light on this.

It’s a good point to note however that the devil is a wicked being, his focus isn’t to make people lose houses, or cars, or money, if anything that’s the focus of men as a result of the devils influence, however, the devils focus is to prevent men from being saved, and that’s why we have the gospel message, which is the power that combats that desire of the devil.

Now our key scripture was speaking within the bracket of those who preach false doctrine, and how Timothy was to handle them. Paul asked Timothy to gently instruct, I remember there is a digest that speaks about the language of correction, and it being subtle and gentle. It further says that perhaps hearing such instruction would help them see truth and escape the devils trap. After speaking of the devils trap, he further explains the said trap.

For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants

The effect of they being in the devils captivity, was that he made them to oppose the truth. We see that this action was as a result of influence from the devil. Another profound statement was made at the start of verse 26.

Then they will come to their senses

Your senses are speaking of your mind. The job of the instruction was to put the mind of that person in order. This shows how important what we let into our mind is. The devil can take captive or a hold of a person’s mind through the kind of content that comes into it. Most times, when we hear false teaching, it’s the result of garbage that a person may have let into his/her mind. The devils trap is he taking captive of a person’s mind and manipulating it to spread his false agenda. Don’t let yourself be a tool for this, guard your heart and carefully select what you let in. It saves from the devils trap.

Lord Jesus, thank you for opening my eyes to see truth in the word. Teach me to always keep my focus on you, and to always secure my mind, amen.
