What is Spiritual Training?
1 Timothy 4:7 – Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly
Well, I guess I could start by just stating the obvious, that whatever is godly is most likely supernatural, therefore when Apostle Paul asked Timothy to train himself to be godly, you can already conclude that, that is spiritual training, and if anyone is in a better place to give tips on spiritual training, it would be Apostle Paul himself.
Looking at our key scripture, Apostle Paul was being keen about something first off. He asked Timothy to avoid arguments over old wives tales and ideas that in essence are godless. What was he speaking about here? Well looking at the preceding verses, you’ll notice Apostle Paul speaking about false teachings, and teachings that come from demons, they may sound spiritual, they may sound exciting, but in essence they have little or no input to you spiritually. Spiritual training isn’t training to just have sharper spiritual senses (though this is very important), or discover “deeper” mysteries of God, but it’s basically a training for godliness. I’ve heard people speak so elaborately on some issues claiming that they have gone through some Spiritual training, they sound spiritual, but on close examination what they are saying has no input whatsoever to a believers growth in Christ.
Apostle Paul spoke further about what godly training entails.
1 Timothy 4:12 – Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity
It would involve you watching how you conduct yourself, and being a great example. You have been saved with a new life so you should express the goodness that is now in you. It may not be all smooth initially, but it’s training, you train yourself to work out and express your saved Spirit.
1 Timothy 4:13 – Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them
The scriptures play an extremely vital role in spiritual training, you should study them regularly, because in them is where you find truths about the Christian faith, and Christ’s finished work. For Timothy to read the scriptures to the church, then he should have been reading them as well.
1 Timothy 4:15 – Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress
Give attention to these things, and you’ll surely see progress in your Spiritual life that everyone would notice, yes people would see it, Spiritual growth is very visible, because as your conduct gets better, people around would surely notice it, you’re not training yourself to please people, but in the end the direct beneficiaries of a better you is those around you.
Thank you Lord for the strength to grow, Lord teach me to always stay focused on my training in you, amen.
