How Are Christians Supposed to Treat People?

Key Scripture

1 Timothy 5:1-2
[1]Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers.
[2]Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters

You are a believer, full of God’s Spirit, and saved eternally, glory to God, and while doing God’s work in ministry, you get to deal with much older people, some of which you may be leading, or pastoring in a local assembly, being saved or being a leader does not permit a nonchalant attitude toward respecting elders.

Trust me this never gets old, it may seem cultural, but it’s scriptural as well. We see Apostle Paul giving Timothy instructions about how he should treat elders, and address them even when bringing corrections as a leader. Let’s not forget that the elders Timothy would encounter would most likely be elders who he was pastor over, yet he was supposed to speak respectfully, in fact our key scripture says appeal to them respectfully. Later on in this chapter, Apostle Paul instructs Timothy to care for the elderly.

Following these instructions, you are living out the truth of scriptures. Living out the truth of scripture isn’t limited to desiring spiritual experiences, but also following instruction that show out our renewed spirit. Trust me it never gets old, and it shouldn’t fade. Notice that Paul asked Timothy to respect the elderly majorly because they were to show him as an example of a believers life

1 Timothy 4:12 – Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity

This means that it is God’s desire for believers to respect the elderly, so you should too. Also it was speaking of addressing them within the context of giving instruction, and this shows the language and manner it should be done, with respect. This aids in easy acceptability of instructions.

Our key scripture also speaks about addressing those who are younger too, this should be done with the same honor you would your brother and sister. These are beautiful in God’s sight, and they speak well of your growth and maturity as a believer.

Lord teach me to always express your love, and to conduct myself in a manner that pleases you, amen.
