Finding Great Wealth
1 Timothy 6:6-8
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth.
After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.
So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content
The truth is, the greatest wealth you can ever find is wealth in Christ. Of course, this isn’t speaking of money, but the riches that we receive in our Spirits as a result of the new life we now possess. I’ll tell you why…verse 7 of our key scripture explains this. It reminds us that we brought nothing to this world and will take nothing out of it, meaning that anything we can gather here on earth is only temporal, and will remain here after we leave the earth. This means that as much as wealth on the earth is enjoyable and a delight to have, it’s reach is extremely limited, because death happens once, and what happens after death is eternal.
Our focus therefore should be geared more toward the riches of our Spirit and not on the riches of the earth that are temporal. Verse 6 then drives the nail in. It says that true godliness with contentment is great wealth. Do you see that, it calls it great wealth. However notice that it didn’t just call contentment great wealth, but it called true godliness along side contentment great wealth. What is true godliness? Well it’s godliness as a result of faith in Jesus, not false godliness that comes as a result of self righteousness.
Being content is great, but it only becomes wealth when a person is saved. It’s called great wealth because it is wealth beyond this world. You get great wealth not by increasing the amount of possession you have, plentiful possession would always be regarded as just wealth, but great wealth is not tangible, yet it is everlasting. If you have Christ, you have great wealth…be content, but still driven to succeed on the earth at whatever you find your hands doing. There’s no pressure, always remember that you have the greatest wealth the universe could ever offer.
Thank you Jesus for the riches in my Spirit. Teach me to always remain focused on it amen.
