Is the Love of Money the Root of all Evil?

Key Scripture

1 Timothy 6:9-10,14
[9]But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.
[10]For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
[14]that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again

Digest

Our key scripture exposes one of the causes of unhealthy desires, and evil thoughts. We are talking about the love of money. Well, it’s not the root of all evil, some evil occurrences happen without money, or it’s love being a premise, but the love of money is a major cause of a lot of evil.

Verse 9 explains something critical to us:

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.

The issue is not even the desire to be rich, but the other desires that come as a result. The desire to be rich isn’t a bad desire, but when that desire becomes the love of money, it then is a problem. Looking closer at verse 9, Apostle Paul speaks about those who have such desires, they fall into temptations, and are trapped by foolish and harmful desires, notice the word trapped being used. The truth is, your desires would always find a way to express themselves, therefore in order to avoid carrying out some actions, it’s best to control your desire. The result is ruin and destruction, well not spiritual ruin or destruction, but physical, which may result in shame, or an inability to effectively express Christ to others, Apostle Paul explains that in verse 14, when he says that following these instructions, no one, speaking of those around you, would be able to find faults in you.

In our key scripture, Apostle Paul speaks about the love of money leading many out of the true faith. Well it’s not saying that many people would become unbelievers as a result of money, but it’s speaking about the product of the faith. Having faith in Christ and learning about Christ’s realities in you produces healthy desires and a proper attitude, however, the love of money would produce just the opposite, taking a person away from the genuine character the faith produces.

Learn to handle your desires, learn to put your desires in check, it helps produce the best out of you that God wants. An unhealthy desire for money would only breed greed, selfishness, and may even make you make some of the worst decisions you could have ever made. Follow these, and from what we see in scripture, I assure you a life full of very little sorrows.

#pray

Lord teach me to always place a check on my desires, and to focus on things that would rightly express your nature in me.
