Does God Want me Rich?

Key Scripture

1 Timothy 6:17-19
[17]Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.
[18]Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.
[19]By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life

After reading a couple of the recent digests, a lot of believers may be wondering if God actually wants them to be rich or successful, well, from our key scripture, we see that in the church that Timothy was a pastor, there were rich folks, and Apostle Paul left some instruction for them. He was not against the money they had, but his message to them was what we have been speaking on for a while, were they place their focus and trust.

Apostle Paul gives the admonition that explains that what we need for enjoyment is given by God, this means that enjoyment is not a function of money…I mean, money can bring some pleasure, but it’s only physical, which would always fade at some point. We are never supposed to be in a position, were our source of enjoyment would be just money, and we totally rule God’s goodness out of it. Be humble, and focus on God as your source of joy, and enjoyment. Never be in a place were you trust so much in money, that you do not pray anymore, placing trust in God’s ability to help.

In verse 18, we see the intent God has for our financial bliss. We are supposed to be unselfish with it, in fact the latter part of verse 18 says “always being ready to share with others”. It should also be the mindset the rich believer should carry, that the wealth at your disposal is supposed to be a tool to express good works, not a tool to oppress or be flamboyant. In society today it may be a little tough, that’s why you need to remind yourself about things like this daily. You are rich so you can express good works even through your riches.

Well, further down the chapter, verse 19 explains that doing all these would help you experience true life. Well it’s not talking about receiving eternal life, that you have at salvation, but it’s talking about experiencing the new life here on earth. Most times, money brings the illusion of a full life, however, a life pleasing just the flesh would never be satisfying, when you spend more time using your money to express your new nature, and as a tool to show love, you’ll experience true life beyond what physical pleasure can give. Always bear it in mind though, that God wants you well, and God wants you to prosper.

Lord Jesus, guide me in my career and business, and help me do well in them. Teach me to be modest, and to always use wealth as a tool to express love.
