How To Give a Spiritual Gift
2 Timothy 1:6-7
This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline
Believers have been called to a life were we are to keep on edifying each other daily, and as often as we can. We edify each other with words of encouragement from the Spirit, or with a spiritual gift that meets another believers need at a given point in time.
When Apostle Paul speaks of a spiritual gift that was given through the laying on of hands, he isn’t speaking about a transfer or a deposit of the gifts of the Spirit. Those are given at salvation. At salvation we receive the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13, 2 Corinthians 1:22), and with the Holy Spirit comes all the gifts of the Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit are within you as a believer. Therefore, when a spiritual gift is spoken off here, we can rule out the thought that Apostle Paul transferred the gifts of the Spirit to Timothy, however, the gift that was given is still regarded as Spiritual, meaning it came from the Spirit. So what is this Spiritual gift? or what are these Spiritual gifts? Let’s double back to the book of first Timothy.
1 Timothy 4:14 – Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you
You see the same term used here. This time, it’s a little clearer, the Spiritual gifts were the prophesies which came from the Spirit spoken to Timothy. When a believer expresses a gift of the Spirit to bless you, see it as a gift, and when you do same, it’s also as though you are giving a gift, one that cannot be damaged or influenced by physical factors.
Apostle Paul told Timothy to fan these gifts into flame, meaning to always keep himself in remembrance of them, as they would guide his actions. I perceive the Spiritual gift Paul gave Timothy, were prophesies just like the elders did. That’s why the next verse, Apostle Paul continues by telling Timothy that the Spirit God has given us is of power, love and self discipline, he most likely spoke words (gave prophesies) to Timothy along that line. The next cause of action for Timothy was to fan those words to flame, and take action, remembering the prophesies that have been made.
Learn to gift your friends Spiritual gifts, give them prophesies or words of knowledge, it’s in you, and they are the best gifts you could give anyone. Also, if you receive a spiritual gift, cherish it, and take action on it…fan it to flames.
Thank you Lord for your Spirit in me. Teach me to always boldly express you, and use the gifts of the Spirit as a blessing to someone.
