We are Made Righteous by Faith

Key Scripture

『 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”  Romans 1:17

Righteousness means being in right standing with God; a righteous person is justified in the sight of God and free from the guilt of sin. But we know that God’s standards are so high, it requires perfection and not one man can be perfect so no man can be righteous by his own doing.

『All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away – Isaiah64:6』

『 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven – Matthew 5:20

Our righteous acts are nothing compared to what God actually wants and our  ‘trying to be good’ could never and can never please Him. But our Daddy being a loving Father made a way out for us; He sent His son Jesus to stand on our behalf. Jesus was the only man on earth who lived a perfectly righteous life and so He met God’s perfect standard.

『 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess – Hebrews 4:14

『 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin – Hebrews 4:15

God was pleased with him;

『 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove – Mark 1:10

『 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” – Mark 1:11

And because Jesus was and is our representative (He stands before God on our behalf), we are made righteous when we believe in Him, simply by faith in what He did for us in His death, burial and resurrection.

『 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus – Romans 3:21 ~ 3:24』

God declares us righteous when we believe in what Jesus did, irrespective of our own acts of righteousness or lack of; just like He declared Abraham righteous because he believed in what Jesus would do (Romans 4:3-25).

Paul as well counted all his acts of righteousness as worthless compared to the righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus Christ and Paul was a pretty ‘righteous’ man in the sight of the Jews according to the law.

『 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ–the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith – Philippians 3:8 ~ 3:9』

Hallelujah! The man in Christ stands righteous before God, justified and completely guilt free because of all that Christ did. God is pleased with us because He is pleased with Christ and when He looks at us, He sees Christ. We have attained God’s perfect standards because we have faith in Christ. We are righteous by faith! We do not have to live a righteous life to be declared righteous but we live a righteous life because we have already been declared righteous by faith in Christ! Isn’t God good?

Glory to God!! I have been declared righteous. I have right standing with God and I do well to confess who I am and my position in Christ at all times.
