False Teaching and it’s Impact on Unbelievers

Key Scriptures

2 Timothy 2:16-18
[16]Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.
[17]This kind of talk spreads like cancer, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus.
[18]They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith

The truth of the matter still remains that Gods greatest desire is to see people saved. That’s why He came to die in the first place. John the Baptist saw Jesus and said “behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29), stating Christ’s purpose in one phrase. That’s why we have been given the ministry of reconciliation, to tell people that the lamb of God has been offered as a sacrifice, and this sacrifice has paid for our sin, and assures us eternity with our Father. That’s what’s at the center of God’s heart for man.

2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent

One other fundamental truth is as much as this is Gods desire, He cannot carry it out on earth except through humans, because He has given us authority over this earth, so if anything can stop this agenda of God from being accomplished, it’s going to be through humans. That’s why when the devil wants to stop the spread of the gospel, he does it through humans as well, e.g making humans put government laws in place to stop the spread of the gospel message.

One other thing that has really stalled the spread of the gospel is false teaching, I mean false messages that in no way depict Christ. In our key scripture, it speaks about two people who no longer taught truth but false teaching about Christ, and as a result, turned many from the faith. Turning many from the faith doesn’t necessarily mean turning believers away from the faith, but making unbelievers believe what is not true, hence putting them in a facade were they think they are believers, but are just in some man made cult.

False doctrine deals a huge blow in the spread of the gospel, and like our key scripture explains, one of the major causes of the spread of false doctrine is worthless and foolish talk.

[16]Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.
[17]This kind of talk spreads like cancer, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus

We are asked to avoid them because of how easily they spread, and their easy spread is as a result of how much they appeal to human desires…desires to make money, desires to please the human nature etc. People only get saved when they believe the gospel message, so any adjustment to the gospel message would mean people would not be getting saved. Let’s preserve this message, and let’s keep on preaching it, its truth and would be fulfilling God’s greatest desire.

Thank you Jesus for the truth, I walk in it, I live by it, and I preach it daily as you give me strength, amen.
