How God loves us.

Key Scripture

『 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  John 3:16

When someone says that they love you, do you seek proof or you just take their words for it? If you believe that person actually loves you then there must be reason, there must be an evidence of that love that is obvious for all to see, evidence on which your conviction of that person’s love stands on.

It’s the same thing with the love of God. Many of us have heard that God loves us but we didn’t receive reasonable proof to back up that claim. Infact, most of the time, the message that accompanied the claims of ‘God’s love’ didn’t make it sound like love at all. Why would God who claims to love us want us to reach some unattainable standards by following a set of rules knowing fully well that we could never make it on our own? Why would God who claims to love us want to punish us and cast us from His presence for the littlest mistakes?

But these things aren’t true because God really does love us and He has proven His love in the most spectacular way ever: sending His son to die for us so that we would  have eternal life, so that we won’t have to try to reach unattainable standards by our own works but so that we can attain those standards simply by believing in what His son did for us in his death, burial and resurrection, and so that we would never ever be seperate from His presence, not in this life nor in death.

Paul reminds us of God’s demonstration of His love for us in the book of Romans:

『 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:6 ~ 5:8』

Even while we weren’t worthy to recieve that love, God found us worthy and loved us nevertheless and He sent His son to show us just how much. We are not unsure of God’s love, we know it for a fact because He presented us with hard evidence.

『 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  1st John 4:9 ~ 4:10』

『 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  1st John 4:18

We are not afraid of the punishment of hell from God who loves us, no we’ve received His perfect  love and we ourselves have been made perfect in that love and now, we know that nothing in this world can seperate us from that love, neither good nor bad.

『 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:35 ~ 8:39』

Irrespective of what we do or what we go through we must remember that God loves us unconditionally and has proven it to us in the greatest way possible. His love for us is not dependent on our experiences and we must consciously walk in His love.

Thank you Lord for your love, thank you for your son who died for me. I grow in the reality of your love for me.
