Why Isn’t the Church Growing?

Key Scripture

1 Thessalonians 1:5-6
[5]For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you.
[6]So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord

Digest

This digest is in response to a question that someone asked a while ago. The person was curious as to why it seemed the church wasn’t growing. Well first off, I’ll love to clarify that. The church is indeed growing, and it will keep on growing, stronger and better as the years go by. In some areas, or in some ministries, it seems as if the church is not growing, and there’s a clear reason why.

The church grows through the spread of the gospel. The gospel message is a spiritual message, a supernatural message backed by God Himself. You may wonder “but we evangelise every Thursday, yet we still see no growth”, well the bigger question you should ponder on, is what is our message when we evangelise? are we sure we are preaching the gospel, or we are preaching something else? When we preach the gospel, God backs it up with power. When I speak of power here, I’m not speaking of just miracles, but I mean God’s supernatural power that convinces people of His love. In our key scripture, we see that the gospel wasn’t just mere words being spoken, but a message that was backed with Gods power, which in their hearts gave them full assurance.

[5]For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true

Miracles are a demonstration of power, but they may not be able to convince a man to stay with God even in persecution, except God has won the persons heart. The gospel is so powerful in itself that even when persecution came, the Thessalonian church still stood firm.

[6]So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord

Let’s see what Apostle Paul said to the Corinthian church.

1 Corinthians 2:4 – And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit

Isn’t this just amazing, the gospel is a supernatural and powerful message that is backed by God and designed to save people. The power is in the message. So if the church doesn’t seem to be growing, then we should check the message. We should be sure that we are preaching God’s righteousness that we receive through faith in Jesus. If we preach the truth, we will naturally see God’s power at work, and more men will have faith in Jesus.

#pray

Thank you Jesus for your power at work in the gospel. Give me utterance to always preach the gospel and help your church grow, amen.
