Giving to Expand the Church
3 John 1:5-8
Dear friend, you are being faithful to God when you care for the traveling teachers who pass through, even though they are strangers to you.
They have told the church here of your loving friendship. Please continue providing for such teachers in a manner that pleases God.
For they are traveling for the Lord, and they accept nothing from people who are not believers.
So we ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth.
Over time, we’ve come to realise that knowledge plays a huge part in our growth. You can honestly say that most of the things you know now aren’t things you discovered yourself but ideas learnt from people around you.
Just like we have school teachers, we also have teachers of the word and we can attest to the fact that we learn a whole lot from these people. Some of them are really close to us, some we see on TV, social media, we even buy and listen to their tapes. Back in Bible days, there was no media, but then the gospel was still taught because people gave their lives for the spread of the gospel. They traveled far and wide to make sure people were taught the truth.
In our key scripture, the Apostle John encouraged the believers to support these “traveling teachers” so as to be co-laborers with them as they take the gospel round.
Mark 16:15 – And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone
Every believer is instructed to take the gospel to all the world, but no one can reach the whole world by themselves. What you can do is take the message to as many people around you, as you can.
Another responsible thing to do is to support those taking the gospel to places you can’t reach, however, we should be careful not to support just anybody preaching false doctrine, but support those who teach the truth.
2 Timothy 3:8 – These teachers oppose the truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith
2 Timothy 4:3 – For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear
Apostle Paul encouraged believers to pray always for him and other ministers of the gospel. Support these ministers in your prayers, your resources go a long way too. Give to ministries teaching the truth, TV stations, podcasts, online media, etc.
Don’t forget that charity begins at home, give to your local church and ensure you take the gospel message as far as you can.
Thank you Lord for the teachers of the word, strengthen them, and help me to always give to them to support your work; amen.
