Deliverance for the Believer

Key Scripture

Luke 10[19] – “Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

Can a believer really be delivered? Is there such a thing as deliverance for a believer? In the key scripture, we see that the believer has authority over the enemy (the devil). First of all, who is a believer? A believer is one who has simply believed in the gospel. One who is saved. You become a believer as a result of salvation. Salvation is from the greek word ” Soteria ” which means to save, to deliver, to protect. The only time we needed deliverance was when we were not yet believers, and what were we delivered from?

Matthew 1:21 – And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”

The word save there is the same word soteria. So that means we were delivered from our sins. That was the only time we needed deliverance. If you search through the new testament, you will never find a single scripture were a believer was delivered, none at all. So the concept of a believer being delivered from evil spirits, from anscenstral curses, etc is actually wrong. We were delivered once and that was when we were not yet believers, but now we have the spirit of God and have been given power and authority over the enemy. An evil spirit and the spirit of God cannot dwell in the same place (not at all). It’s either one or the other.

Ephesians 1:13- “And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago”

The King James Version puts it this way, it says we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit (Identified). For something to be sealed, it means it can’t be opened. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will come and abide with us forever. It’s an eternal arrangement. So, knowing that we have the Holy Spirit forever and that he can’t be in the same place with an evil spirit, it will not make any sense for us to  be delivered from an evil spirit.

Ephesians 1:13,17-23

[13]And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

[17]asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.

[18]I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

[19]I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power

[20]that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

[21]Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.

[22]God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church.

[23]And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.

From verse 17 to verse 18, the prayer of Apostle Paul is for us as believers to know what we have through Christ (the Holy Spirit). To understand how great the power of the Spirit is and what He can do. Raising Jesus Christ from the dead is the greatest show of power and the one who did that great thing now lives in us. One of the major Pauline prayer for believers is that they know what they have in Christ through his sacrifice. In verse 21, we are told that Christ is seated at the right hand of the father (a position), a place that is far above every principality, every power. Plus the best part is that, we are seated with him.

Ephesians 2:6 – “For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.”

You see, this is our position. We have been positioned just like Christ, far above principalities and powers. So if that’s the case, how can we be delivered. When we received Christ we became a whole new breed, part of the household of Christ, we became the church that is being headed by Christ. Our lineage changed, our gene changed, and we became new creations.

Just like Apostle Paul, my prayer is that we grow to understand what we have in Christ and not be tossed to and fro. We have been delivered once and that’s from sin, and now we reign in Christ. There is therefore no more deliverance from anything, you reign over them all. So stop looking for deliverance and just enjoy your new life in Christ.

I pray that my eyes be flooded with light and the eyes of my understanding be enlightened. I pray that I continue to grow in the knowledge of God and all that I have in Christ Jesus. Amen
