Controlling Sinful Desires

Key Scripture

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
[3]God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.
[4]Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor—
[5]not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways

We need to understand that being a believer does not take your natural, earthly, human, sinful desires away. Our Spirits are transformed and renewed, but our bodies which harbour earthly desires still remain the same, likewise our minds which harbour sinful thoughts. That’s why as believers, we spend time renewing our minds in order to live out the goodness we now have in our newly formed and transformed Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-17
[16]So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.
[17]The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions

You see, so your sinful desires still abound, though you have Gods Spirit which is what controls your new nature within you. This means that some work needs to be done on your mind as well as your body. What we do with our mind is to constantly, daily, renew it.

Romans 12:2 – Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect

Our minds influence our actions, so we need to keep our minds full of God’s truth. The more we do so, the more we live above sinful desires.

For our bodies, it’s a little bit different. In our key scripture, we are asked to stay away from sexual sin, then we will be able to do control our bodies, and not be consumed with lustful passion. That’s the way we keep our bodies at bay, we stay away from things that can trigger evil desires in us. Our key scripture highlights a sexual scenario, but the same applies for other sinful actions a person may indulge in. Staying away from sinful instigators, may involve staying away from some friends, laying aside certain movies or video games, avoiding certain books or blog posts, you name it. When we put such instigators away, we’ll be able to control our bodies, and flee sinful actions. When those instigators are near you, it can be tough keeping the body at bay, that’s why it’s best you take them as far away from yourself as possible. Take a hold of your body, don’t let sinful passion consume you, instead deliberately let God’s Spirit take center stage in your life.

Lord Jesus, thank you for living in me, help me live according to your will, amen
