How To Love

Key Scripture

1 Thessalonians 4:9 – But we don’t need to write to you about the importance of loving each other, for God himself has taught you to love one another.

God Himself has taught us to love. Before we get ahead of ourselves, we know that God didn’t come down with a board and chalk and begin teaching us about love, what this scripture was speaking off is how Gods example of love teaches us how to love. God is an awesome teacher, in fact one word used to describe the Holy Spirit is counsellor, that is teacher.

When we see God’s example of love, we see a template of how God wants us to love. Gods ultimate example of love is seen in the sacrifice He made through Jesus, it’s the ultimate show of love, and Jesus said it himself that “greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for a friend”. Being willing to die for someone is the ultimate show of love you could ever express. I’m not saying you should find the next person to sacrifice your life for, but what I’m saying is you should be able to love people that much. See what the word says:

1 John 4:9,11
[9]God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.
[11]Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other

Since God did it, then we should too. We don’t love simply as an emotional response to situations, rather we love because God has shown us how to and also empowered us to love the same way (look-up: Roman’s 5:5).

We should also remember that we are growing in love, so I may not expect a new believer to immediately be ready to make some sacrifices in love that a much grown believer would make. We grow in our expression of love the more we discover the depth of God’s love for us. We should also pray so that God strengthens us to love just like Himself, however ensure that you are always growing in love.

1 Thessalonians 4:10 – Indeed, you already show your love for all the believers throughout Macedonia. Even so, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you to love them even more

The more we grow in love the more we love. So I urge you to love, it’s all a part of God’s will for you.

Lord Jesus, teach me to always and continuously grow in love. Help me to see people how you see them.
