Why Should You Be Diligent ?
Proverbs 22:29 (KJV) – Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
Our key scripture is a very popular one, and also very true wisdom. A diligent person stands a higher chance of being before people of repute than a person who is just stark lazy, and that’s some good reason to be diligent in your affairs in life, but we also know that not all diligent people get to meet or stand before reputable people, or kings if you’ll rather call it that. See what another scripture says:
Ecclesiastes 9:11 (KJV) – I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all
This means that things may never really work out the way we expect them to. A strong man won’t always be the person to win a battle, and a fast man would not always be the person to win a race, likewise a diligent man would not always be the person who would stand before kings. There are people who were born into royal families, they mingle with the high and mighty in society, but they are very lazy, by virtue of their background, they have easy access to dignitaries, yet, they are lazy.
Well, all this means that beyond a desire to, “stand before kings”, there should be something else that drives us to be diligent. Being diligent would also mean that you’ll get to have a greater impact on more people. It means that you’ll be putting in a lot of work to ensure that through yourself people get blessed. That’s the most important and valuable thing, the impact you have on people’s lives.
1 Thessalonians 2:9,11
Don’t you remember, dear brothers and sisters, how hard we worked among you? Night and day we toiled to earn a living so that we would not be a burden to any of you as we preached God’s Good News to you.
And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children
Apostle Paul was speaking here about how hard he worked, not to receive accolades from anybody, but in other to be a blessing to many people. So be diligent, be ever ready to be a blessing. The smiles you put on the faces of people is it’s own reward. When you approach diligence this way, you’ll take a lot of burden off yourself, and you’ll realise your higher calling, which is far beyond what any man can give.
Thank you Jesus for the gift of people. Teach me to be centered and focused on being a blessing to them, amen.
