Righteousness by Faith

Key Scripture

Romans 4:3 – For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”

Righteous is one word we don’t use very often, but it means to be blameless, and in our case, blameless before God. That means being able to stand before God not feeling guilty, and God seeing us as good, and innocent. For a human, how can this righteousness before God be achieved, well it’s really straight forward in the bible. We are made righteous by faith, when we believe the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Some people have said that we are made righteous when we follow God’s laws, but the truth is as much as Gods laws are perfect and good, they aren’t the way provided for us today to be made righteous, in fact the law has already served its purpose on the earth:

Romans 10:4 – For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God

Christ accomplished the purpose of the law, so that we can trust in Him to be saved. Jesus said there was no other way to the Farther except through Him, no other way including the law. It’s even funny how following the law as a means to be made right with God is greatly frowned on by Apostle Paul in the new testament.

Romans 10:1-4
[1]Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved.
[2]I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal.
[3]For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.
[4]For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God

Galatians 3:1-3
[1]Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross.
[2]Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.
[3]How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?

Romans 3:28-30
[28]So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.
[29]After all, is God the God of the Jews only? Isn’t he also the God of the Gentiles? Of course he is.
[30]There is only one God, and he makes people right with himself only by faith, whether they are Jews or Gentiles

The truth is if the law could have made us righteous, then Jesus won’t have had to die. Trying to keep the law won’t save you, but believing in Jesus Christ is what saves us and makes us righteous. Read the scriptures above again, you’ll notice that there is no mention of sin. Being righteous by faith is by no means an avenue to go on a sin parade, but it means someone paid the price for us to have this free gift of righteousness, and with this gift also comes a new Spirit which is to enable us not just be righteous in God’s eyes, but to live righteous so that people around us can see it also.

Romans 8:2-3
[2]And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
[3]The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins

You have been freed from the power of sin, and you have been made righteous, so your actions don’t make you righteous, what Jesus did makes you righteous, but at the same time, you have been freed from the power of sin, so you can express this righteous life as well. Through faith, you are made and given the ability to be righteous.

Thank you Lord for your gift of righteousness. I know by Faith that I am righteous in you.
