You Have the Holy Spirit

Key Scripture

John 3:16 – “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life

When a person becomes a believer, something amazing happens to that person. God identifies the person as His child by putting His Holy Spirit in that person. It’s a one time occurence that happens to your Spirit immediately you trust Jesus for your salvation. When it happens, you may not feel anything physically because it happens Spiritually, and most of the time, our physical senses cannot sense Spiritual changes, but by faith we trust and know that the Holy Spirit comes to live in any person who believes in Jesus.

There is a misconception though that the Holy Spirit lives outside a believer, and only enters into the believer after a period of time, or a series of events. Well that belief is actually false, and may drive some people into funny practises or unhealthy ideologies. In our key scripture, Jesus says that anyone who believes in Him has eternal life, in Ephesians Apostle Paul explains that all humans were dead as a result of sin, but now have life when they come to Christ (Ephesians 2:1-5). We know that the life being spoken about here is Spiritual life, but were does this life come from? and what does this life mean, let’s see what the word says:

2 Corinthians 3:6 – He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life

It says here that the Spirit, referring to the Holy Spirit gives life. The life Jesus promised is being given by the Holy Spirit when He comes to live in you. This means if you don’t have the Holy Spirit, then you can’t have this life. Let’s see some other scripture.

2 Corinthians 1:22 – and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us

We are identified as belonging to Christ by the Holy Spirit. Meaning that God knows those who are believer’s because they have the Holy Spirit. The moment a person believes in Christ, he receives the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus (John 14:16-17). The scripture above says that He is the first installment, basically the first thing you receive when you become a believer, because that is how God identifies His people.

Ephesians 1:13 -.And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago

The scripture above throws more light to this, it says once you have heard the good news which saves you and believed you are given the Holy Spirit. It’s an instant result of trusting Jesus Christ for salvation.

Romans 8:9 -.But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)

Praying to receive the Holy Spirit is not supposed to be a practise for believers. The moment you have faith in Jesus you already have Him inside you, and you can do all the things that the Holy Spirit enables you to do, you can express the gift and the fruit of the Spirit. You may need to learn about them, and learn how to trust God to make them manifest, but it doesn’t change the fact that you have Gods Spirit inside of you, and this identifies you as a child of God. Finally guess what Jesus says about His Spirit.

John 14:16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

Thank you Lord Jesus for your Spirit in me, I trust in you, so I know I’m saved, and I walk in the realities of your Spirit in me.
