Resisting the Devil

Key Scripture

James 4:7 – So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you

There is a supernatural world, and on the earth, one truth about that world is that there is a devil in operation somewhere in it. The devils activities are very clear from scripture. He seeks to cause havoc, and stop humans from accomplishing God’s purpose.

1 Peter 5:8 – Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour

1 Thessalonians 2:18 – We wanted very much to come to you, and I, Paul, tried again and again, but Satan prevented us

Satan’s ultimate goal is to always disrupt God’s plans to be executed through man, and given the opportunity, he would achieve this without leaving an apology. That’s why in scripture, most especially in the new testament, we are encouraged to resist and fight the devil. This is beyond physical combat, because the devil is not a physical being, so there is only little your physical arsenal can do to keep him at bay, however supernaturally, you can stop him from carrying out his agenda. Jesus before He ascended declared that all authority now belongs to Him, and He would be with us till the end of time.

Matthew 28:18,20
[18]Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
[20]Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

This means that though the devil lives on the earth, Jesus has authority over him, and through us can express that authority. Notice I said through us, and this is because we are the ones who would forward God’s agenda on the earth, and that’s why our key scripture says we should resist the devil. Christ has the authority, but if you don’t put it to use in actively resisting the devil, then the devil would still act like he is in charge.

James 4:5-8
[5]Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.
[6]And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
[7]So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
[8]Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world

The scriptures above show how we can resist the devil, and it’s by submitting ourselves to God. God has placed His Spirit in us so that we can do His will. However the devil would try to distract you with things of this world, or the things of the flesh. When you give in to those, you let the devil distract you from Gods agenda. So you resist him by giving yourself to Gods bidding. Verse 8 in the scripture above says “your loyalty is divided”. Keep your eyes fixed on God, and the devil would have no choice but to flee. Resist the devil, it’s God’s will for every believer.

Thank you Jesus for the authority you have given me in you. Give me strength to resist the devil and focus on you only, amen.
