The Devils Foothold

Key Scripture

Ephesians 4:27 – for anger gives a foothold to the devil

The devil is very active in our time, he may have been defeated by Christ, but he still moves around looking for people to devour;

1 Peter 5:8 – Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour

Now when I say people, I’m not necessarily speaking about unbelievers, but I’m speaking mostly to believers, who are born again, and full of Christ’s life. The scripture above was an instruction to believers which means that you can be a believer but still have a foothold of the devil on your life. When the devil has a foothold on a person, it means that he can use that person to carry out his agenda, we’ll talk more about this later in this digest.

The devil is a Spirit, and in order to carry out his bidding on the earth, he needs some kind of physical host. Even when it comes to illness, he’ll use bacteria or some kind of infection to cause that illness. A good example of the devil working through human hosts is seen in the killing of Jesus, it’s also the same thing that happened when Peter tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross

1 Corinthians 2:8 – But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord

Matthew 16:23 – Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

However, for the devil to be able to work through any man, he needs to have a foothold on that man, having a foothold means he can freely manipulate the mind of a person. We can give the devil this level of authority over us if we yield our minds to him.

2 Timothy 2:25-26
[25]Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.
[26]Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants

The scripture above says they have been held captive…where? In their minds, and that is why they the devil can manipulate them to do whatsoever he wants. In the scripture above you can also see one root through which the devil can hold a person’s mind captive, and that’s false teaching. When we listen to teaching that isn’t true, and we believe it, it leaves our minds open to receive all manner of false information about God, and when we do this, it’s easy for the devil through those false information to make the person do what he wants, that’s how most Christian cults are formed and operate. Apostle Paul speaks about this:

1 Timothy 4:1 – Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons

This is why we need to be deliberate about the kind of teaching we listen to, and ensure the message is always Christ and nothing or no one else.

1 Timothy 3:6 – An elder must not be a new believer, because he might become proud, and the devil would cause him to fall

Pride is also another way the devil can have a foot hold on a person. Being proud teaches you to trust yourself rather than God. When this happens, it’s easy for the devil to suggest thoughts, that once you succumb to, would mean that you are given to his will. We should be deliberate about ensuring that pride doesn’t fill our hearts giving the devil a chance to suggest unhealthy thoughts. The same applies to anger, our key scripture speaks about this. In anger, your emotions go hay wire, and at that moment, the devil can suggest thoughts that would mean you following his bidding. We should guard our minds against anger and pride, because through them, the devil can make even the most mature of believers do his will.

Finally, the people around you, your friends can also be an avenue through which the devil suggests thoughts so that you do his will.

2 Corinthians 6:15 – What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?

When you surround yourself with people who do not regard God, or who are constantly yielding to the devils will, and these people have some influence over you, you will through them carry out the devils bidding at some point. That’s why it is important that we are deliberate about the people we call friends, and we let have influence over our lives.

In all, there’s one thing that seems to be very prevalent, and it’s that we must be deliberate about what we let into our minds. As a believer, the devil may not be able to manipulate your Spirit, but he can place suggestions in your mind to enable you do his will…don’t give the devil a foot hold in your life, learn to always resist him.

Thank you Jesus for my renewed Spirit, help me be conscious to avoid the devil having a foot hold in my life. I refuse to do his bidding, amen.
