The Power in Tongues
Ephesians 6:18 – Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere
Praying in tongues, that is praying in the Spirit is one controversial aspect of Christianity today that ought not to be controversial. Before Jesus was crucified, He promised the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17), and when He rose from the dead and was about to ascend, He said that those who believe in Him would speak in new tongues (Mark 16:17), and later in the writings of Paul, we now get to understand that these new tongues are a result of the Holy Spirit living in a believer (1 Corinthians 12), the same was also evident when the Holy Spirit came in the Apostles and cloven tongues of fire appeared on their heads and they spoke in tongues, so we are certain that tongues are not just a figment of peoples imagination, but the word confirms that tongues are indeed real. Some people also believe that tongues ended in the time of the Apostles and should not be spoken in our time, well I’ll leave you with this to think about, the word never gave a time frame, for as long as the earth is still standing that tongues should no longer be spoken.
Well this digest is not actually to explain tongues to us, or how we get to speak in tongues, that we would do in another digest, however, this digest is just to show us the benefit of speaking in tongues. Let’s see what the word says about tongues:
1 Corinthians 14:4 – A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church
We see here that tongues strengthens you. It means that when you speak tongues, or rather pray in tongues, you are the first beneficiary. Our key scripture encourages believers to speak in tongues, and to stay alert, it’s almost as if one helps you do the other. When you pray in tongues, it’s your Spirit that is praying and it keeps you focused on the Spiritual. It strengthens you, and puts you in a position to receive God’s direction, because your mind at this point is focused on the Spiritual.
1 Corinthians 14:14 – For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don’t understand what I am saying
Apostle Paul said something very profound here, that when he prays in tongues his Spirit prays, but he doesn’t understand his own statements. This is because, though his Spirit prays, he prays through the Holy Spirit. You can’t understand what you are praying for because the Holy Spirit prays through us what God wants us to pray for. In other words, he prays the will of God.
1 Corinthians 6:17 – But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him
Since your Spirit and Gods Spirit (the Holy Spirit) are joined, when you pray in the Spirit, it’s the Holy Spirit praying, and when He prays, He prays exactly what God wants you to pray. You pray for things that you could never anticipate with your mind, and things that God has in His plan for you. When you pray in tongues, you never make mistakes because you will always be praying exactly what God has in His heart for you to pray, so keep praying in tongues, pray in the Spirit always.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your gift in tongues, teach me to always pray in tongues and receive your direction daily.
