You’ve Already Got it
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope,
comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say
It’s a point that we cannot over emphasize, the fact that you are not striving to attain eternal life, but God has already given you eternal life, it’s very clear, in fact too clear from scripture. Knowing and accepting this would greatly change how we relate with God. When you believe that your being in Christ does not guarantee eternal life, but is a pathway that may or may not lead to eternal life, then it means that you would most likely not reap the full benefit of being in Christ and see God’s purpose for your life. Being in Christ is beyond just getting to heaven, which in fact is already assured for us, I’ll explain better in this digest…but being in Christ means that on this earth we have the opportunity to live God’s life and carry that life with us when we die. It means we can be directed by God, and carry out His perfect will on the earth which we could not do outside of Him.
Jesus spoke about eternal life, and here’s what He said:
John 3:16 – “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life
I love how Jesus put it, it’s been here the whole time. “You shall have eternal life”, it’s a life you can lay a hold off, you’ve got it as long as you are a Christian. Knowing this changes everything, it helps us to trust more in God and in His leading, it teaches us to draw closer and closer to God whom we are confident we would spend our eternal life with, and it also keeps us strong in faith. If we did not have this kind of assurance of eternal life many believers would not be able to stand strong in faith, because you aren’t even confident that the God you serve would receive you when you die.
In our key scripture Apostle Paul made a very important point, he said that God “gave us eternal comfort”, notice the tense being used there, it’s past tense meaning that it’s something that has already happened. Christ has already given you eternal life, and that happened the moment you had faith in Him. You are not striving for eternal life, instead you are striving to express the result of your new eternal nature here on the earth. Don’t sweat it my friend, you’ve already got it.
1 Peter 1:23 – For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God
Thank you Jesus for the gift of eternal life, I am saved, and heaven bound, hallelujah.
