You Cannot Be Saved By Your Effort

Key Scripture

Philippians 3:2-3
[2]Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved.
[3]For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort,

Digest

We need to be reminded of the truths of our faith as often as possible, and this is because if we aren’t, we may never know when consistently listen to false ideologies may make us believe a lie. Apostle Paul was telling the Philippian church to be careful and avoid those who were teaching a lie about salvation. These people were already saved, however, believing a lie which tells them something false about how they were saved would make them no longer see value in the salvation they had received, and may rub them of walking in the full benefits of salvation.

The lie Apostle Paul was particular about was or rather is the fake belief that people get saved through human effort. The gospel has been and would always be that we are saved through the finished work of Jesus. That’s what gives us boldness to express and do all the things we see possible in the word.

Verse 3 of the key scripture said something amazing. It said that “we rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us, we put no confidence in human effort”. The truth remains that if human effort was sufficient for salvation, then Jesus would not have had to become our sacrifice. Salvation entails placing your trust to be saved completely on Jesus. Many people want to ascribe their effort to their salvation so that to a certain degree they can be self righteous and boast about how much effort they put into it, but see what the word says about salvation:

Ephesians 2:8-9
[8]God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
[9]Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Do you see that? Salvation is not a reward, or payment or the result of you efforts, but it’s completely Gods gift given through Jesus. We can’t even put confidence in human effort, because human effort would always have its short comings, see what Jesus said about human effort regarding salvation:

Matthew 19:26 – Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.”

With human effort, attaining salvation is impossible; but only through Gods effort can we see a possibility.

#pray

Thank you Jesus for you gift of salvation, I stay walking in the truths of salvation, amen.
